JOCKEY'S LUCK
GIVEN RETAINER BY OWNER OF ENGLISH DERBY WINNER. Everything' comes to him who waits. The former Sydney jockey W. ("Togo") Johnstone has found this is so during the last few weeks, when he was given a retainer by Lord Glanely, owner of the Emglish Derby favourite, Colomho. IWhen Johnstone first went tc Eng- i land to ride, a couple of years ago, it was ia.t the time the English Jockey Club had placed a ban on any mere "foreign" riders being given licenses in England. This forced Johnstone to' transfer his sphere of activities to France and India, where he did exceptionally well, and now the ban has been lifted he has reaped a very rich reward. Next to England's wonder jockey, G. Richards, Johnstone is credited with having the second largest retainer of any jockey in England, and this, possibly, for that matter, means the world. Although the English Derby will not be run until next June, Colombo is favourite for the classic. Colomho, who is by the English Derby winner, Mjanna, cost something like 600 guineas as a .yearling, and has already won about £12,000 in stakes. Johnstone's rise to fame labroad is little short of amazing, and further indicatfes the ability of Australian riders to adapt themselvcs to all kinds of racing conditions in any part of the world. * Johnstone, although he displayed good form in Melbourne and Sydney for several years, was never really ranlced as a top-noteher, but no doubt his expericnce in other countries has improved his prowess. It will be the ' . crowning acbievement of his career if he should win the English Derby. Thai raee has nevcr been won by lan Australian rider. Many have tned, but all have failed. Frank Wootton, Stanley Wootton, | "Brownie" Carslake, Frank Bullock, I George Smith, A. C. Walker, Frank Dempsey, W. Scanlon, and E. Morris are Australians who have ridden without success in the English Derby, i but possibly they have never had such I a good opportunity as that which is I ahead of Johnstone.
