DOCTORS BAFFLED
MYSTERIOUS DEATH PATHOLOGIST UNABLE TO ASCERTAIN CAUSE. DRUG IS SUSPECTED. At an inquest lat St. Pancras recently on Jesseli Gharles Ludlow, 35, of Fairfax R'oad, Hampstead, Sir B'ernard Spilsbury said he could not state the cause of death after carrying out la post-mortem examination. Arthur Dale, a cousin, said that be and Ludlow bad been living together for about four months. One night Ludlow went away and did not come iback until two days later. In tbei morning Ludlow was still asleep whenhe had breakfast in the room. As Ludlow had been away for two> days he thought he anight be sleeping- j off the effects of a mild dissipation. i Later, when the landlady came up, he | asked her to lOoki at his cousin, and j she said he was dying. Miiss Ada Timjpson, the land'lady, f said when she examined Ludlow he j was in a coraa and his breathinig1 was shal'low. She ga.ve him a 30th' of a grain of strychnine hypodermdc injection, while MJr. Dale went for the doctor. Ludlow rallied slightly. She had found nothdhg in the room except three aspirins in a glass tube which had contained 12. Dr. Van Prague, who was sumimioned by Mr. Dale, sadd it looked to him as if the coma was possibly due to narcotic poisoning. iSir Bernard Spilsbury said that he 'found a numfber of skin lesions on the limbs. '"Frankly, I thought they were some sort of drug- eruptions," added Sir Bernard. He found some. brown fluid in the'stomach with an unusual odour, He had sent certain of the organs for analysis, which would take a fortnight. He did not think death was due to diabet.es, but had pointed out this possibility in his report to. the analyst. Death was possibly due to narcotic drug poisoning. 'The coroner said he would adjourn the inquest for a fortnight, and if any witness could flnd where LudloAv had been during 'his two days' absence they sbould report it to his office.
