EXHIBITION TENNIS
ENGLISH AND AUSTRALIAN PLAYERS SEENI IN WELLINGTON RAIN STOPiS M'ATCHES Wellington, Saturday Drizzling rain delayed play in the exhi'bition tennis matches between English, Australian and New Zealand players on the association's courts at Miramar this afternoon. For over an liour the eourt was heavy, thus slowing up play. Perry and Wilde (England) beat Malfroy and France (New Zealand) 3 — 6, 6—2, 6 — il. The Englishmen were slow to start, netting and outing too frequently to cope with the steady returns of the New Zealanders. In the second and third sets, however, the English players, with sharp angled volleys and . drives, good lobbing and sound play from the net, quite outclassed the New Zealanders. Turnbull and Quist (Australia) ibeat Ma-lfory and France (New Zealand), 4_6, 6 — J., 6—3, The game was a very poor one, a strong, gusty wind interferingi with accurate play, and for players of the class engaged it was merely a question of which pair played less badly. Turnbull and Quist (Australia) beat Wilde and Lee (England), 7 — 5. Rain then stopped play for the day.
