ALL WINNING TEAMS SECURE FOUR-POINT VICTORIES IMPRJOVED BATTING STANDARD A general improvement in batting was registered by most teams in the second day's play of the first mat, ches in ithe McLean Cup cricket competitions played on Saturday afternoon. Altbough overcast, the conditions were much more pleasant than on the opening day the previous ■Saturday. Albion and Old Boys had good outright wins against Ngongotaha and Mamaku and last season's joint holders of the trophy (City) received a four-point defeat at the hands of High School. The best performance during. the afternoon's play were as follows: —
Batting Burton (Albion) 65* Dawson (High' School) 45 R. .Beckett (Mamaku) .... 33 Gresham (Albion) .... 31 *Not out. Bowling Burton (Albion) ..... 4 for 7 Penno (Albion) 4 for 14 Ewert (Old Boys) .... 3 for 12 (Beale (Old Boys) 3 for 15 Exeiting Fnish With 57 runs in hand for the loss of three wickets Beale and Lawrence continued Old Boys' second innings against Mamaku and runs came freely until Beale stepped in front to Reed after scoring 19 runs. A good
partnership 'by Heley and Matthews produced 45 runs, the former retiring at 30 and Matthews being caught with 26 to his credit after a bright innings. Ewert compiled a useful 18 and the innings closed with the total at 152. Reed with four wickets for 33 runs was the most successful ibowler for Mamaku. Requiring 188 runs for a win, Mamaku commenced quietly but later adopted forcing tactics. Price (13) and R. Beckett (33) figured in good partnerships with McCutcheon (27) and lax fielding by Old Boys contributed to the score. Scoring mostly by singles, Maguire endeavoured to play out time but the innings ended with a few minutes to go for a total of 110, Maguire being not out 11. Ewert, three for 12 and Beale, three for 15 shared the bowling honours for Old Boys. Ngongotaha Batting Debncle A batting debacle by Ngongotaha in their second innings gave Albion an easy four-pointer by 108 runs. From the previous sc'ore of none for 22 runs, Burton and; Greshami addtd 27 runs ibefore the latter was dismissed by a fine, running catch by Frost for 31 runs. Burton continued to bat quietly, but with confidence and received assistance from J.J. Lewis (10) and Penno (14) in carrying the total past the century mark. At 4 p.m. the innings was declared close'd, Burton being tben undefeated with a score of 65 runs. Harding and Harris opened confid- | ently for Ngongotaha, but the latter had his leg stump uprooted by a good ball from. Sutherlar(d with only 7 runs scored. Hewson partnered Harding and the pair settle'd down to make amends, adding 41 runs before Harding had his wicket broken. by Penno. He had contributed 29 runs. Hewson and Bowden were the next to go as victims of Burton without a j run being added and the tail quickly ] collapsed before the bowling of | Penno and Burton, the side being all ! out for 59 runs. However, Godsalve (15), Porter (16) and Thomas (15), helped the score along and Young played a good innings of 16 runs before being run out. The side was all out for 97, Morris being the not-out man with six runs to his credit. Requiring 62 runs for an outright win, Dawson and Ewert opened confidently, the former being caught by Mulligan off Alexander, after compiling a useful 45 runs.
