COLLEEN’S LETTER
o. COLLEEN.
Dear Kiddies, Lots of letters again and heaps of Fun Corner, but I must confess thait I was disapp'ointed with' the standard of the entries. You really have done heaps better other weeks. Thti'e were only four Seniors who attempted to describe their favourite picture and even these four wer© not as good as many other entries I have had from the same members. I notice rather more .spelling mistakes than we should have from our Seniors. I am afraid some of you don't read over your entries after you have written thcm, otherwise you would not leave out words and letters, as some of 'you did this week. I noticed, too, som© American spellings creeping into the letters — is it the pietures, I wonder? Two from this week:manoeuvre spelled maneuver, and theatre spelled theater. I know our English spelling is rather silly at times and that with these two words the American spellinig is much more sensible, ibut it is still not •correct. And silly or not, I' think we would like to k-eep our English spelling, don't you? The Juniors were a little better than the Seniors, but not very mu'ch. Very few of you seemed to have any plans for Guy Fawkes Day, which rather surprised me, because when I was smaller, we always made rather a fuss of Mr. Guy Fawkes. Of course, in Scotch communitiss the girls and iboys save up their crackers for New
Year's Eve, but in most places Guy Fawkes Day is the time for fireworks. And although we burn his effigy, poor Guy Fawkes was not burned himself — he was hanged, which is almos't as unpleasant, I should imagine. So Biddy is a little wrong in her history when she tells us that Guy Fawkes was taken out and burned. Frankly, kiddies, I did not think the Juniors' entries this week were good enough to get the full gramophone points so I have awarded only three to Frances, who was first, and two to Biddy, who was second. I'mi really disappointed because I know from what I have seen of your worlc that you can do lots better. And now I have been nasty, I'm igoing to try and be nice. I really was pleased with the Fun Corner entries and all the little notes and letters I received. You are wonderfully loyal members, I think. And, by the way, there are nine new members this week, which is splendid. I really must remember to put our coupon in the paper, for I am afraid that it is my fault that it -has not been appearing. 1 am turning over plans for a Kosy Korner party for Christmas. Do you think that would he nice? If it can be axranged you will hear all about it very shortly. iNow, time is getting on, so don't forget our Christmas Page. I am outting in a special reminder
for you this week, to-
