! Paris, October 26 j At the Aix en Provence trial Dr. I Barral testified that the post-mortem I on a consumptive girl, Magali Herbin, J who died while in the care of the | Schmidt sisters disclosed the enorm- | ous quantity of 2.7 grammes of zinc in ' the hody. Fifty centigrammes would be fatal. He eonsidered the girl had been poisoned. Katherine Schmidt, 0ne of the acI cused, protested her innocence, declaring that Sarret often gave champaigne to Magali, who complained of its taste. The court adjourned after two witnesses nearly came to blows, necessitating the intervention of three policemen. After discussing the mysterious malign power which Sarret and Katherine Schmidt alleged each exercised over the other, the court heard the evidence of Dr. Murat who certified ! that the death of Lady Arnould, while she with with the sisters, wras a natural death. There was no sign of poison. Other evidence showed that Katherine's husband, who died four months after he was insured, lost 5£ stone in that period. Witnesses declared that Philomene Schmidt went to a notary and arranged for power of attorney, enabling her to cash morny from insurance owing to the alleged death of Katherine. The notary who entered the box to confirm the story fainted and was carried from the court.
