ASSAILANT SENT TO GAOL FOR FIVE YEARS A BRUTAL ASSAULT

Palmerston N., Thurs. 'Concurrent sentences, making ft itjotal of five years' imprisonment, were imposed by Mr. Justice IVFacGreigor on Lindsay Edward Edist Garner (22), of Wellington who was found guilty earlier in the week of assaulting with another person unknown Christian Sorensen, storekeeper, at Himatangi, with intent tQ rob; also with assault so as to cause actual bodily harm and assault only. > After eounsel had pleaded that accused be sent to. a Borstal Institute, the Judige observed that it was a hrutal assault .on an old man of 84 years. Under the Crimes Act accused was liable to imprisonment for life and a whipping on a charge of assault with intent to rob. Five years' imprisonment Was imr posed on the major charge, three years' imprisonment on the second count, and one year's imprisonment on the third.
