KUIRAU STEAM
The decision of the Rotorua Borough Council to take some, definite action with regard to the diversion of the Kuirau steam from the main highway will be received with satisfactjon. A settlement of this problem has been too long delayed and now that a way appears to have been opened for successful treatment it is to be hoped no obstacles will be allowed to arise to' prevent final accomplishment. The proposal to wall off the steam by means of a f ascine , barrier had little merit. The artificial hedge might have helped to lift the steam clouds above the roadway and slightly improve visibility, but it would have provided no effective, permanent cnre of the trouble. Two things have been plain throughout the discussion of this problem; namely, the conservation of thfe native rights to the hot water 'and the necessity for the use of pipes. The authorities have endeavoured to protect the natives and at the same time avoid the expense of the piping. The elfort has been unsuccessful, and it is to be sincerely hop0d that the Tourist Department will realise the full necessity of co-operating with the boroiigh to remove a very grave danger. The outlay should have been faced long ago, but better 3,ate than never, and the motorists who use the road will await >vith interest the development ff the latest, and we hope, final scheme. . j
