March 27, '1897. — IThe volcanic action which has been more or less manifest nsar the mouth of the Puarenga stream every year since 1894 was again observed on Tnesday last. Mud and water were thrown up to the height of about 50 feet. Nothing has oecurred there since. April 11, 1897. — Mrs. C. E. Nelson, of the Geyser Hotel, Whakarewarewa, sends us a mammbth "ironbark" pumpkiiji in order to demionstrate tha capabilities of "our popr pumice soil" when properly treated. Mrs. Nelson is an enthusiast, bo'th in vegetable and flower culture, and the present sampie ■of Whakarewarewa produce is infinitely creditable to the grower. We await its conversion into. "punkin-pie" with considerable impatience. M|ay 8, 1897.— The football season is evidently la.pproaching but it would be well for the tganiins of the town to remember that tli© public streets are not suitable ground for this recreation. The other day as an invalid gentleman was driving along Fenton Street a iball stx*uck his pony full in the face. It was at a considerable expenditure of inerve force that he succeeded in gaining the mastery ov_r the startled animlal. The attention of the poilice h'as been directed to the matter. Miay 15, 1897. — 'It is expected that an expert in ' petroleum deposits and the means of working them will visit the Waiotapu oil leases shortly with a view to thedr development. May 22, 1897. — The machinery from Mjessrs. Karl Bros. mill recently purchased by Miessrs. Kusabs Bros. has been successfully moved to Mamiaku. The Ohaupo machinery belonging to the firm is also being placed in position, and when the mill is in full work employment will be provided for over 100 men. The' output of Ithe mill is assuming enormous proportions.
