Auckland, Wednesday The conduct of ' a f oreman placed in 'charge of young men in'a -relief camp was denounced by counsel- in the PoliCe Conrt, when three young •men admitted stealing beer and whisky from a lodge hall at Pukemiro ah'd doirig £10 damage. The men were hefore the Supremo Court the other da.y on other charges, and "two Were sentenced to iniprisonment. . Counsel, Mr. Noble, said a shocldng state/ of affairs was disclosed. These young. men had never been in trouble before. They had 'to enter a relief camp or s'tarve. They were put. in tbe. charge of a f oreman, who gambled with them and won what money they hlad. He also supplied them with househfeakingimplements. 'Counsel said there should have been a Dominion-wide- outcry about this •case, but nothifig 'had been said or done even by the churches. The Miagistrate, Mr, Hunt, saidlie wa's not going to give them extra punishment. They would be convie.ted and discharged. - • " iCounsel mentioned that. the foreman bad been sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
