THE CAULFIELD CUP
A GREAT PERFORM3ANCE Sydney, Monday. The Sydney Herald commenting on the Caulfield Cup, says : — Gaine Carrington won lafter one of the greatest perfortmances in the history of the race. He was drawn wide out at the harrier, but the ex-New Zealander ridden in a most accomplisbed manner by Pike, not being further back than fifth after the first turn was nego■tiatod. Strange as it may seem, in. view of the record time, the pace slackened at the mile post, iand it was at this stage -that Pike showed his generalship. He gave Gaine Carrington his head, and crossed over to the rails in front of the field, then allowed Taisho to make the pace. In the straight Gaine Carrington responded with rare determmation, and before the last furlonig' had the raoei in. his keeping. Pretzel, Break Up, Oro and Jimmie Boy provided a great battle for the minor place, but none had a chance of overhauling' Gaine Carrington. Thei disappointment of the race was Segati, who finished last. Knvera received a slight check, but
auparently the weight was too much for him. Middle Watch had every chance, and finished eighth, showing .sisrns of lameness after the race.
