FLY FISHING

NEW AREAS CONSTITUTED IN WAIOEKA AND WAIMANA RIVERS WHAKATANE RIEPRESENTATION iR'epresentations made dujring th: last season by the Whakatane Rod and Gun Club for the elosing of the Wiaimana River for all other methods of fishing other than with the fly have been considered by the Depiartmcnt of Internal Affairs and as a result certain amendments have been made to the regulations respeotiing the operations of anglers in this area, w,hich will become operative as from October 31 next. During the closed season the representations have been fully investigated by the Conservator of Fish and Game in the district (Mr. A. Kean) who reported upon the position to bh'e department. During an inspection of the area, he found that there were certain objections from farmers ia.nd others to the setting ap'art of th: whole area for fly-fishing, it being pointed out that they were necessar-

•uy restricted m their hours of fishing and did not have the Opportunities of the visiting angler. It appcared therefore that the position conld best be met by the constitution of special areas of the river for fly-fishing purposes, leaving other parts of the river where other methods could b:e- employed. A recommendation was thei*efore •made to the department that a secfiion of the Waimana River, from where it is joined by the Wai-iti stream, to another point. seven miles down-stream, at the top end of the Tahora Flats, be set apart for flyfishing purposes. This has now been provided for by amendment of the regulations and in addition .a simdlar area has been proclaimed in the Waioeka River from the suspension bridge at Oponae, or the Waiata Vilt, age, to a point five miles down stream where it is crossed by another suspension bridge.
