— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Timaru, Wednesday Members of the English tennis team Perry, Lee and Wylde, opened their New Zealand tour with . exhibition matches here to-day. The visitors ar— rived from the north this morning and were accorded a civie reception, This afternoon, they played exhibition singles and doubles assisted • by C. Angas, Canterbury .singles clxampion, There was a large attendance of the public. It was not expected that the visitors would produce theix* best form after a week's continuous travelling" following upon strenuous tournaments in the United States, but while they were on the courts they nevex*theless revealed something of the ability which has placed them in the first flight of world players. . Chief interest centred in the appearance of Perry, who has reeently annexed the United States national sipgles title. - He revealed a great variety of strokes and amazing accuracy on both forehand and backhand. His overhead work also was outstand- ? ing. Perry beat Angas 6-4, 6-2 but the Canterbury player gave a fine display, repeatedly breaking through the Englishman's service and winning points with nice cross court shots, Lee beat Wylde 6-3, 6-0. The lattex* was patchy only occasionally producing outstanding shots but he gave a greatly improved display in the doubles, giving a great exhibition of net play. In the doubles, Angas partnered Pex-ry and the pair took the first two sets when they eased up, Lee and Wylde winning the next two. Perry and Angas clinched the match winning the final set 6-2. Angas produced tennis in keeping with that of the visitors. His service and his angle shots were his best assets.
