TIMING AN ENGINE

Following is a good method of timing a six-cylinder engine: — Remove the tappet cover, turn the crank until the dnlet valve of No. 6 cylinder begins to open; remove the spark plug fkom No. 1 cylinder, and by putting a pencil or screwdriver through the hole locate the top "dead-centre" position of the piston. Then with the ignition at about two-thirds retard adjust the make and break points, so that they 'are just opening when the distributor is on No. 1 segment. This segment ■can be located by traeing the wire from the spark plug of No. 1 cylinder.
