LEAKING TYRE VALVES

Unnecessary work and delay will j often he avoided if the habit is de- j veloped of testing the tyre valve to ensure that it is not leaking immediately after the pump or air hose has been removed when adjusting the pressure of tyres. A simple and effective test can be applied by moistening a finger in tthe mouth, and applying a film of moistnre to the top of the valve. This film will disclose any leak. There is always a danger of some leakage at the valve after the tyre has been inflated. This is due to particles of dirt, or of rubber torn from the hose connection, lodging in the seating of the valve and preventing it from closing properly. When snch a leak occurs it can generally he cured by momentarily depressing the valve pin as far as possible, and then releasing it smartly. The sndden outrush of air will blow away the foreign rnatter, and the force. with which the valve closes will then cause it to seat firmly. As new valve insides can be purchased very cheaply, it is wise to replace these units about once every 12 months.
