"SMITHY'S" return wants no favours and still able to "paddle 4 own canoe" GREAT WELCOME AT MASCOT
— By Telegraph — Copyright),
(Rec. 8 p.m.) Sydney, October 15 Sir Chaiies Kingsford Smith arrived at Mascot, Sydney, at 4 p.m. as arranged and although welcomed many times before was tumultously acelaimed by excited thousands after , his record fiight from England. | A large aerial escort, including his ! favourite "old bus," the Southern CrosS) met him many miles- north of Sydney and accompanied him to the landing ground. The enthusiasm and the admiration when the famous flyer glided to the ground was never more pronouuced. j Among the dense throng welcomi ing him were representatives of the Federal and S'tate Governments, leading citizens and aviators. j The citizens of Melbourne think so much of "Smithy" that they eontemplate opening a public subscription list to purehase him a high-powered aerop.lane to enable him to compete in the Centenary Air Race. Some speakers emphasised the hope • that the Fsderal Government woulcfretain the services of "Smithy" | in an advisory capacity on aviation matters in which he is so well inf orm- | ed and with due regard to the great j advertisement he has given Au'stralia. j "Smithy" replying said that he j wanted no favdurs. He was still able to "paddle his owii canoe," and was always glad to know that Australia got some cmkt from his exploits.
