HAIL HITLER!
There are apparently no limitsto the cheerful optimism of Germany's Chancellor. ■ Marriages are no longer made in Heaven,' but by the Nazi Council, the Almighty has been relegated to a* subordinate position under Herr Hitler and now the arts are to be dragooned into a properly respectful attitude toward the new All Highest. The latest development is the empowering of Dr. Goebels, Minister of Propaganda, to organise writing, broadcasting, the theatre, the press, music and the plastic arts into "chambers" under the control of his ministry. This should make matters very much simpler for German
arnstie circies. Foetry can oe condensed into standard form "for he's a jolly good fellow" — and there can be only one gentleman in Germany to whom that can apply at the present time. No doubt'the highest form of music will be the melody to which these delightful words are set. The swastika, no doubt, will be the noblest figure for plastic representation, and the highest form of sculpture and colour work something that depicts an important little gentleman in a tightly buttoned tunic, with an j unr.uly Napoleonic lock strag- ! gling across his forehead and a | moustache something like Mr. | Chaplin. The noblest form of ! literary expression will be "Hail j Hitler" — sufficient in its simplicity. The most appropriate form of artistic expression in dress will be the brown shirt like a Boy Scouts' jamboree, and the highest form of physical expression, the devotional Nazi salute and the graceful goose-step. Journalism in Germany should be simple — merely a swastika heading and "hail Hitler" in the . largest and most Germanic capitals in the case.
