GRACIE FIELD’S LUCK
SHARED WITH ORPHANS. Miss Gracie Fields, one of the most generous-hearted of actresses, has been quick to share her latest piece of good fortune with others. ' ~I"t was announced recently that she 'had signed a new film contract for what is said to be the biggest fee ever ' paid to a cinema star in England — at £2 a minute, calculated to amount to about £28,800. It was later learned that Miss Fields had decided to give £5000 to build a new wing to the orphanage at Peacehaven which she gave several years ago for the children of variety artists. When a reporter asked her, at the Pilladium, if this was true, she laughed, and said, in a characteristic way. "Yes, that's right. I want to make a real do of it. "The orphanage itself is to be opened in a few weeks. I don't know if I'll be able to go down to the opening, as I am so busy." The orphanage was formerly Miss Field's own house, and she gave it to the Variety Artists Trustees Guild for its new use together with 18 plots of land.
