STRANDED ON LEDGE

YOUTH'S EXPERIEN CE ON A ROCKY COAST RESCUED BY BOAT Christchurch, Wednesday To be stranded fifteen feet above the sea on a ledge of, rock for over three hours was the experience of a Christchurch yoi^th on Saturday afternoon, The adventure occurred in a small bay near Taylor's Mistake. Shortly after two o'clock two young men, Ramond Burgess* and Selwyn Muff, both of 371 Cambridge Terrace, Who had been spending the day at S-umner, decided on exploring the rocky coastline between Bell's Baths and Taylor's Mistake. They set out on their journey and scrambled over ledges jand rugged rocks. Nearing Whitewash Head it was necessary to swim in several places in order to avoid some of the more difficult rock faces. Both men, who were clad in bathing costumes were able to make the small swims without much effort. After an hour and a half of rough travelling the two explorers had covered a distance of nearly a mile. At a bay just by Giant's Eye it was necessary to swim nearly a hundred yards through a moderately heavy sea. Muff, who was the better swimmer, accomplished the task, but in clambering up the rocky face was buffeted by the heavy surf, and he shouted to Burgesq not to make the attempt, hut to stay on the ledge until he could be rescued by other methods. Muff continued on to Taylor's Mistake, where he made his companion's plight known. Word was sent to Sumner and the lifeboat Rescue II, with the small boat Aid in tow, left for the scene. A line was passed to the man on the rock, who, tying the rope around his waist, dived into the water and was takeni on board the boat little the worse for his experience.
