SATURDAY'S RACING

"Canard.")

AVONDALE AND MASTERTON II OLD SPRING MEETINGS TWIO-YEAR-OLD FORM

(Notes by

The serious part of the spring programmes commences in the Auckland prov.ince on Saturday with the Avondale Jockey Glub's spring mc eting and the track is in the best of order, early morning gallops for the past few days having been very interesting. The main event for the bulk of punters is the Avondale Stakes when the two-year-olds will appear for the first time in the province. Otherw.ise the meeting is not particularly attractive to the public. * * * The M'aiden plate has attracted a huge field and really should be run in divisions, though the club is within its rights ,in staging a sihgle race and thus saving extra stake mon-y. It will not however appeal much to the punter for the size of the field is far too unweildy to make any horse a betting proposition. There are 31 horses engaged and of these Sir Val, Loombination, Jewelled Girdle, Keith Hall, Alpinus, Supreme Ruler, Good Run, King Musk, Solo Song, Lady Diana,- Gold Musk, Calientc, Star Artist, Echo Song and Miss Lulu may be expected to go fairly well. Solo Siong who is remembered in connection with the Bay of Plenty eircuit pleased "Canard" greatly by the way she moved the other morning and is the makings , of a useful filly this season. Oalicnte can go six and so can Alpinus and Echo Song while Star Artist is a handy three-year-old who was not over-raced and Lady Diana when at Tirau shaped well. Miss Lulu mightupset the whole issue for she is a good sort as is Good Run who galloped well at Te Aroha last week. A very open race with preferences for Solo Song Alpinus Miss Lulu from. — MAIDEN PLATE Special weights; 7 furs. Sir Val, Loombination, Luck's All, Jewelled Girdle, Keith Hall, Nicodemus, Sir Rua, Teddy Boy, Alpinist, Supreme Ruler, Bold Bid, Chief Emerald, Landatory, Solo Song, Lady Diana, Lady Pandora, Miss Lulu, Aubretia, Mountain Breeze, Camilla Hcrn, Echo Song, Lorelli, Star Artist, Morehu, Gold Mark, Caliente, Expectancy, Tondeleyo. * * ❖ They are a mixed lot contesting the Highweight from old Kawini, who showed that he was not a spent light last jumping season, to°various types of hurdlers sueh as Free Air, Full h&easure, Mia Stella and Wee Pat who paid a big divvie at Pukekoh?. Ornamental pleased the other morning by a fine work-out and Valueless is class. Full Measure if sound shoul 1 igo well as should Mahkill if the going is at all soft. Melody Star and Versant are somewhat surprise entries but popular clioice may includ' Ornamental Valueless Free Air from. — KINGSLAND HIGHWEIGHT HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. Valueless, 10.8; Full Measure, 10.6; Ornamental 10.G; Cape Fair, 10.4; Mahkill 9.10; Free Air, 9.8; Tatyon, 9.7; Mia Stella, 9.2; Wee Pat, Melody Star, Kawini, Versant, 9,0. 3s

The Devil's Dozen is to contest the Champion Hack seven, a rathcr awkward barricr on this course and the sweepstakes mak-es the race worth winning. After Trentham Grand Sport is sure to be followed and Psychologist will havo friends over seven Delrain and Gigantic have both work • ed nicely of late the latter being at a handy distance. Moonfleet goes well at times but failed on this track last year. British Columbia may not be ready but if right shuuld beat most of the others. Gay Marigold went well the other morning, covering six in good time. One never knows with Teels but she ha? to be caught in the mood. Allegietto should be handy for hc is genuine while Tavern Knight did not come up to expectations on his trip south. He is not a good doer when travelling. Gay Sheila should find this a good work-out for ithe Guinea= and should be the hardest to beat. D'Artagnan won down south and Aligmnent the full brother to Croupier is expected by his Takanini friends to be very hard to top otf- A very hard race with preferences for Gay Sheila British Columbia Ailegretto from. — CHAMPION HACK PLATE Special weights; 7 furs. Grand Spot, Psychologist, Delrain, Gigantic, Moonfleet, British Columbia, Gay Marigold, Teels, Ailegretto, Tavern Night, D'Artagnan, Alignment.

Given an ounce of luck King March ought to be close in the Avondale Cup with 8.9 though Speedmint will probably start the actuul post favourite. L'Allegro must be fancied with 8.10 and All Humbug has had ■the racing to get him fit. King's Knave may need a race or two hut Red Sun from Trentham should be right on the job and the distance at this time of year is in his favour. Royai Artist is too erratic to follow but Carfex is a model of consistency. Lord Val now under Wiggins is being tried at a new distance for him having been restricted to mile races up to now but as he has always been noted finishing on he may be able to run it out. Desert Star has not done anything since his return from an unsuccessful foray while Ornamental may take on the Highweight. Biform reads the most likely outsider. The favourites may he Carfex King March Red Sun from. — AVONDALE CUP HANDICAP, 11m. Speedmint, 9.0; L'Allegro, 8.10; All Humbug 8.9; King March 8.9; King's Knave, 8.8; Red Sun, 8,7; Royal Art-

ist 8.7; Carfex, 8.6; Lord Val, 8.5; Desert Star, 8.0; Prince Val 8.0; Ornamental 7.2; Bifoi-m, 7.0. • » :J: After his Wanganui win Whenuakura is sure to start favourite at the machine for the Stakes and he should go well for he is out of that grand mare Silver Link. Gay Blonde is a relative of Gay Sheila and Cynara appears useful. Pomard. is one to remember but is green. Of the others good reports are to hand of Tray Bit, Sporting Blood and Flaxen but the public choiee may be Whenuakura Pomard Cynara from. — AVONDALE STAKES ...... Special weights"; 5 furs. Sporting Blood, General Kew, Gay Wind, High Tea, Tray Bit, Whenakura, Gallant Knight, Sporting Song, Gay Blonde, Cynara, Pomard, Lady , Burleigh, Flaxen. * * * Few of the entiants for .the Flying have any form this season and this makes what form. there is stand out rather too prommcnUy. Greek Gold naturally has topweig.it after Ellerslie running and Paganelli meets him on 21b better terms. "The Pagan" has always liked the Avondale course and notched his first wm there as a two-year-old. Puss Moth is a swallowcatcher from Pukekohe and if right should be hard but has not done any public galloping of late. Hampton Park is in nice trim and worked well the other morning as did Chiee Ccok, though the latter may barely be ready. Diatomous was a fine two-year-old last season and Exaggeration should go well. Merry Way is a handy sort from Taranaki and' Quiet'.y has recent form in hack events. Solomon was a decent sort of two-year-old but has not sported silk this season. An open race with choices for Paganelli Puss Moth Greek Gold-Exaggeration from. — F LYING STAKES HANDICAP Six furlongs. Greek Gold, 9.5; Paganelli, 9.3; Puss Moth, 8.0; Hampton Park, 7.12; Diatomous, 7.12; Chief Cook, 7.8; Exaggeration, 7.2; Merry Way, Quietly, Solomon, Gay Rose, 7.0. The Swanson mile has a solid field and form is missing for most at this stage of the year. Royal Gallant may do eight furlongs and may not, but ' Cherry King's pavty were on the j mat the other day and he is said to go the full journey. Gay Bronoy can get seven or eight while Grand Score Musquil, Mjerry Lap and Black Marlin may d0 best of the rest. The most ( sought after may be Cherry King Merry Lap Musquil from. — ; SWANSON HANDICAP, 1 mile. | Royal Gallant, 9.0; Cherry King, | 8.8; Gay Broney, 8.7; Catchem 8.4; Hushing, 8.3; Musquil, 8.3; Grand Score, 8.0; Merry Lap, 7.12; United, i 7.11; Echo Song, 7.7; Palm Queen, 1 7.7; Black Marlin, Bold Bid, Prince j Colossus, Barbados, 7.7. jt: The first day ends with the Henderson Handicap and here form is praetically nil this year.
