A request for a share in the proceeds of an art union to assist in providing a fund which will enable New Zealand art students to be sent abroad to further their studies was made to the Minister of Internal Affairs to-day by a deputation from the Association of New Zealand Art Societies. It was stated that it was desired to award periodically a travelling scholarship, tenable in Europe and open to New Zealanders who wei. e students of fine arts and architecture. The cost was estimated at not less than £350 per annum. Dr. Carbery was the spokesman. In the course of his raply the Minister said some time ago art unions were returning a profit of £17,000, but the last few years something like £10,000, The policy of the committee making the allocations was directed with the object of relieving as much as possible distress in the community, and keeping in existenee organisations and associations which "operated to the benefit of the community and which were suffering from depression. "We might be able to do something for you towards a scholarship for one year," he said, "but the establishment of an endowment in the present circumstances presents difficulties to me in making remommendations to my colleagues." The Minister promised that the recommendations made to him would be placed before cthe committee responsible for the allocations.
