GAME OF CHESS
MOVING STREET TREES FROM PLACE TO PLACE. . "I think this game of chess with trees should stop — moving them from ' street to street, particularly at this . time of the year," said Cr. J. Banks at Friday evening's meeting of the ' Rotorua Borough Council when a recommendation was made hy the re- ' serves committee that pittisporum trees planted a year ago in Froude St. should he removed and planted round the parking area near the bridge at Whakarewarewa. Cr. Banks said that these trees ' had been planted by Mr. Tschopp and had heen the subject of considerable discussion. They had had to be very carefijllly tended beflore .they had grown and now that they were established it was proposed to remove ' them. The Mayor said that the planting round the parking area was necessary and it was proposed t0 replace the trees hy native shrubs. There were gum trees growing in the street but these were not regarded as satisfactory and it was proposed to remove them when practicable. With the planting of native shrubs, the street ' would still be planted with native flora. However, he quite agreed with ' Cr. Banks that it was too late in the ' year to displace the trees and that they would probably die if removed at present. Other councillors agreed, but fur- ' ther discussion arose in connection with the respective merits of gnms and native trees for street planting. After ;a brief session, reminiscent of discussions on this same subject which occupied the previous council at considerable leng'th, it was decided to delete the clause and bring the matter up again at a later date.
