(Press Assn.-
sweeps the waitangi wharf in chatham islands
-By T'elegrajjli — Copyright).
Christchurch, Sunday. Accor'ding to information reeeived here a tidal wave occurred at Waitangi in the Chatham Islands, £P few weeks ago. Particulars are meagre asfew actually saw the wave but from. accounts brought by passengers who arrived on the S.S. Tees to-day, it appears that warning of the wave was first given by the sea retreating from the shoTe near the new wharf. At this point, where there is usually a depth of 15 feet of water, the sea-floor -was laid bare. The wave came in-shore with a loud roar sweeping right over the wharf and high up on the beach. Loose timber on the, wharf was swept overboard but was later recovered when it was f ound that nb damage had been done. Tidal waves are not unusual ih the Chathams.
