PAINFUL BURNS
BOTTLE OF VARNISH EXPLODES WITH SERIQUS RESULTS &AVED IN TIME Wellington, Friday. Frederick Howard, of King's Crescent, Lower Hutt, was badly burned about the face and body last evening. A bottle of varnish had been placed on the mantelpiece, well away from the fire. 'Mr. Howard and his wife were sitting in front of the stove when the bottle cracked and the contents made contact with the stove. Mrs. Howard had heard the crack and managed to escape, but her husband was enveloped in flames. His clothes, saturated with the variiish, blazed fiercely. In an endeavour to prevent the spread of the fire he rush'ed outside, but this only made matters worse for himself. Miss Howard and a young man, however, saved him. Mrs. Howard ran out to alarm the fire brigade, and just managed to- do so before fainting at the box. She was found there by the brigade when they dashed up. Meanwhile the fire had been put' out. A doctor was called and sent Mr Howard to hospital.
