Auckland, Friday. The failure of the Government to make provision for the r'efund of saies tax paid for a transaction which resulted in a bad debt was discussed at a meeting of the Auckland Chamr ber of Commerce. Provision for such a refund was made in Canada and in Australia, it was stated. A letter from the council to the Minister of Finance, asking for an amendment to provide for a refund, was approved. Discussion also iarose on the question whether it is the retailer or the 1 wholesaler who is entitled to the benefit of the 5- per cent discount for prompt payment of the tax. In reply to inquiry by the council, the Minister of Finance, the Hon. J. G. Coates, wrote that the question was one for the wholesalei's and retaile'rs to settle between them. An amendment "to the law, as suggested by the council, would he regarded as an interference in business hy the Government. Th'e council approved a draft reply by the chairman, stating there was a moral obligation 011 the Government -to make clear beyond all doubt the intention of its legislation,- and not to introduce a, bone of contention between different sections of '"he ccmmunity.
