OVERDUE RATES
ROTORUA COUNTY COUNCIL CONSIDERS DRASTIC ACTION The question of overdue rates was discussed at the monthly meeting of the Rotorua County Council yesterday, the clerk, Mr. A. Bellingham reporting that there was still a substantial amount of arrears owing on previous years rates. A number of these accounts had been placed in the hands of the county's solicitors for collection and in other cases he himself had issued warning of possible further action. It was stated that the failure to pay these rates was placing the county in difficulty and also precluding any possibility of a general reduction in rates being decided upon. It was also placing an additional burden on •those who paid rates when due. The next rate demands would be issued this month and the clerk said that if arrears were not then paid, drastic action towards their collection would have to be taken. Following general discussion in which the views of the clerk were supported, his action in the matter was approved.
