HUGHES HEADS CAMPAIGN TO AWAKEN PUBLIC INTEREST

Sydney, September 13. Australian defence necessities have loomed large lately in the public cye. Mr. W. Hughes is a figure in the agitation. He spoke at the organising meeting of the Citizens' Defence League, the object of which is to arouse the people to a proper appreciation of their danger in the event of an international blaze developmg. The military authorities favour a voluntary scheme as opposed to a compulsory system. The eountry units under the compulsory system which was dropped by Mr. Scullin s Government in 1929, are now being revived on a voluntary basis. The men are enlisting readily _ and are preparing for terms of trammg with the existing city forces.
