CHESS NOTES

THE CHAMPIONSHIP AN INTERESTING GAME BETWEEN BURTON AND FRAER ' THE THIRTEENTH ROUND (Speeially written for the "Morning

Post" by

Results of the twelfth round in the senior championship : — Tattersall beat Edwards, Kurney beat Booth, and Andrews beat Heywood. Tibbitts v. Fraer was adjourned, and the remainder of the games postponed. Eleventh round. — Fraer beat Burton. Tenth round. — Roland beat Clark. Junior — H. Heley beat Dixon, Musgrave beat Bailey, Mulligan beat Jenkins, W. Heley beat Shaw, other games being postponed. Eighth round. — Lenihan beat Shaw. The adjourned game of Fraer v. Burton resulted in a win for Fraer Play for a time centred round black's hanging pawns, the opposing knights taking a prominent part in the skirmish. Both players then commenced onslaughts on the opposing king. The position then became complicated, and in a series of exchanges from which the end-game suddenly emerged, black became a rook down, and •resigned. Fraer's play in this. game •was some of tbe finest I have seen played in the club. As a result of this game, Fraer .was put in the lead for the senior championship, being one point ahead of Andrews, and two and a-half points ahead of Burton, but since then the position has altered. At the commencement of his game with Tibbitts, Fraer was three pawns down and appears to have a lost game. Tibbitts, by the way, is playing a very sound igame and does not appear likely to make a mistake. A loss to Fraer in this game, combined with the alteration in the pointings due to the withdrawal of Paterson and Booth from the championship, will means that Fraer, Andrews and Burton will have an equal number of points for first place, and the resulting play-off should be most interesting. My sympathies, however, are with Fraer in this sudden turn of events. Although Andrews beat Heywood, the loser played a great game and is easily the most improved player in the club. Experience in match play was a deciding factor, and Heywood was forced to resign to his formidable opponent. Edwards played a good opening against Tattersall, but failed to break his "duck." His play is rapidly improving and he should remember a great master once said "Measure your progress by your losses." The draw for the thirteenth round is as follows: — Senior: Kurney v. Jackson; Vinall v. Tattersall; Saxby v. Clarke; Fraer v. Watson; Burton v. Tibbitts. Heywood, Andrews, Roland and Edwards have byes. Junior: Bailey v. Lenihan; Jenkins v. Musgrave; W. Heley v. Mulligan; H. Heley v. Shaw; Bould v.' Dixon; Blencowe v. Rowley; Martin and Evans have byes. The thirteenth round will be played on Friday next, players first mentioned having the move. The match committee would like all those players who have not as yet met L. E. Andrews to play off as soon as possible as he may not be available in the near future. All postponed games should also be finalised as soon as possible. Trap In "Queen's Gambit Declined" Most players know the following opening moves in the Q.G.D. : 1P — Q4, P— Q4, 2P — QB4, P— K3, 4 B— Kt5, QKt — Q2. In this position can white win a pawn? And what is black's reply if he does attempt to? 5 P x P, P x P; 6 Kt x P, Kt x Kt! 7 B x Q, B — Kt5 ch. 8 Q — Q2 (forced) , B x Qch. 9 K x B, K -x B, and black is a whole piece up. This Week's Problem White mates in two moves. Position: 8, 4R3, 3Kt4, 1PK5, 2P3Q1, PlKt5, K2B2P1, 8. Check position: White pieces: K on QR2, Q on KKt4, B on Q2, Kt on QB3, P's on QR3, QKt5, and KKt2. Black pieces: K on QB4, R on K2, Kt on Q3, and P on QB5. Answer to last week's problem: — B — Kt2.
