NEEDED AN ANAESTHETIC TO MAKE HIM LET GO JAMMED FIST IN PIPE

Robel't Ease, aged 2, of Mitchell Street, Bondi, yesterday afternoon, in spite of an hour's pleading, a.nd bribery by his distracted parents, and to be given an anaesthetic before he would release his grip on a stone which held his hand wedged in a pipe. The ehild was dropping stones down the pipe which was about -l(hree inches in width, on an old disused tennis court in Nathan Street, Randwick. He then put his arai down the pipe and grasped a stone, but, when he tried to withdraw it, found it was firmly wedged. He cried, and his parents, with others who were playing tennis, raced over* to his side.- ^ They tried vainly to persuade him to release his hold on the stone, ^ even offering him ch'ocolates if he did so. After half an hour his - distracted parents informed the Eastern Suburbs Ambulance. Ambulance officers joined the others, and pleaded with the child. to let go. _ . They poured oil down the pipe and tried nnsuccessfully to' extricate his arm. Then, after an hour's fruitless pleading, Dr. Booth, of Randwick, was called, and administered an anaesthetic. The child lost consciousness, relaxed his grip and. his arm was then gently drawn from the pipe. The effects of the anaesthetic wore off in a few minutes, and th'e child, happy again, was taken home hy his parents in a car, tennis heing abandoned for the dayv
