MATCH PLAY IN WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUED SOME SURPRISE S PRODUCED

Rec. 8(30 p.m.) Melbourne, September 4. The first round of match play in the Australian women's championship produced some surprises with the defeat of Miss McLeod and the Misses Tolhurst and Mrs. Alec Russell. Results were : — Miss Kernot defeated Mrs. Russell, 6 and 5; Mrs. Dodgshun (N.Z.), beat Miss Lascelles, 5 and 4; Miss O. Ka$ (N.Z.). defeated Miss P. Jones, 4
and 3; Miss Nankervell beat Miss j Peggy Nankervell at the 19th; Miss j B. Gaisford beat Miss Snsie Tolhurst 3 and 2 ; Miss Perry beat Miss Shirley Tolhurst, 3 and 2; Miss O. Lefebvre beat Miss Sale, 2 and 1; Miss J. HoodHammond beat Miss N, McLeod, 8 and 8. Mrs. Dodgshun remarked at the finish, "I am the solitary 'Mrs.' left in the event." _ , , The quarter finals will be played to-morrow.
