The first round of match play in the Australian women's championship produced some surprises with the defeat of Miss McLeod and the Misses Tolhurst and Mrs. Alec Russell. Results were : — Miss Kernot defeated Mrs. Russell, 6 and 5; Mrs. Dodgshun (N.Z.), beat Miss Lascelles, 5 and 4; Miss O. Ka$ (N.Z.). defeated Miss P. Jones, 4

and 3; Miss Nankervell beat Miss j Peggy Nankervell at the 19th; Miss j B. Gaisford beat Miss Snsie Tolhurst 3 and 2 ; Miss Perry beat Miss Shirley Tolhurst, 3 and 2; Miss O. Lefebvre beat Miss Sale, 2 and 1; Miss J. HoodHammond beat Miss N, McLeod, 8 and 8. Mrs. Dodgshun remarked at the finish, "I am the solitary 'Mrs.' left in the event." _ , , The quarter finals will be played to-morrow.
