ROTORUA WINS WAIKATO REPRESENTATIVES BEATEN BY THREE GAMES TO NIL VISITING FORWARDS WEAK Another win was seeured by the Rotorua representative women 's hoekey team at the Government Grounds on Saturday afternoon, when it met and defeated Waikato by three goals to nil. A light breeze made the playing conditions ideal and there was a fair attendance. An advance shortly after the commencement enabled the visitors to pin the Rotorua players in their own terxdtory for some time, but the Waikato forwards lacked combination and peneration and made little use of a number of chances. Rotorua were forced to concede a penalty corner, but cleared safely axxd were soon on attack. A series of forward rushes by Rotorua looked dangerous for Waikato, but over-eagerness on the part of L. Tanner, on the wing, resulted in her heing caught offside several times. It was not long, however, before the home team again raided the visitors' citadel, a hit from a scramble in the goal-mouth being capably cleared by T. Brugh (Goalie) but she was unlueky to have her clearing shot intercepted by E. Mitchell, who placed a hard, high shot into the corner of the net. In spite of this reverse, Waikato were having more than their share of attack and rushes led by L. Matuscha and S. Lymburn were giving the Rotorua backs plenty to do. On the left, J. Chaytor was not playing lxer usual sound game, heing out .of her accustomed position on the left half. The work of the visiting forwards, however, lafcked finish and the Rotorua goal was rarely seriously threatened. In contrast, the Rotorua forwards were always dangerous, L. Tanner • and M. Mitchell staging some pretty passing which often nonplussed the opposition backs. T. Bxmgh, in goal for Waikato, saved well for her side and showed resourcefulness and understanding of her responsible position. During one of tlxese exchanges, however, L. Tanner placed a high shot into the net, the' goalie slightly injuring her hand in a valiant effort to stop the hall in mid air. Rotorua now had a two-point lead and closed the spell with this advantage. Play in the second spell was more /evenly shared hy both teams and was a trifle faster. The visitors still failed to develop any combination, however, but the backs generally did all that was required of them on defence. The only serious position for Rotorua occurred when the visitors packed into tlxe home circle and a cross-shot from L. Matuscha was deflected by N. Hiini. Rotorua cleared from the penalty corner and E. Mitchell seeured her second goal from a rising shot from the edge of the circle aftex* a fine combined movement between lxalves and forwards. Although they tried hard, Waikato could not score and they were still attacking when the final whistle closed the game with the score unehanged in Rotorua's favour, Rotorua 3, Waikato 0. Messrs. A. Watts and C. Casey were the referees.
