CANTERBURY BEATS WEST COAST BY BIG MARGIN Christchurch, Saturday. Canterbury (holders). retained the Ranfurly S'hield to-day by defeating West Coast by 23 points to 14. Can-tex-bury started off well by scoring two tries in quick succession and converting both. The first was scored by Hazelhurst, the first five-eighths, who cut-in cleverly and then converted his own try. A few minutes later Hazelhurst made a brilliant opening, running King into position for the latter to score between the posts. Hazelhurst again converted. Cantex'bury 10, West Coast 0. West Coast opened their score when Martyn kicked a penalty goal from the sideline. A few minutes before halftinxe, a forward rush saw Cottrell, the Canterbury captain go over for a try. Hazelhurst goaled and the holders led by 15 to 3. The second spell opened witlx vigorous forward rushes. Coast attacked [ strongly, and added another three i points when Martyn goaled from a penalty for a scrum infringement. Canterbury increased their lead when Mullan, Hazelhurst and Hattersley all handled for the last-named to score. The kick failed. West Coast notched their first try when a neat movement caught the holders napping, Scandrett running roxxnd to score under the posts. Martyn converted. Canterbury 18, West Coast 11. Hazelhurst scored his second try shortly afterwards, going over unopposed from a scrum and convert-
ing the try. Canterbury 23, West Coast 11. Desperate attenxpts to score hy West Coast wex'e rewarded when King dived over from the loose. Max*tyn missed at goal. The final score was: Canterbury 23, West Coast 14.
