CHESS NOTES

'Ruy

RESULTS OF CHAMPIONSHIPS SENIOR AND JUNIO'R ROUNDS SUBSEQUENT DRAWINGS

(Specially Written for the "Morn-

ing Post" by '

Seniors — Results of the eleventh' round: Roland beat Tattersall, Clark beat Edwards, and Saxby beat Tibhitts. Fraer v. Burton was adjourned, and Heywood v. Jackson postponed.' Tenth round. Burton beat Saxby, and Heywood beat Booth. Junior: W. Heley beat Dixon, Musgrave beat Martin^ and H. Heley beat Rowley. Bould v. Evans was post.poned. Twelfth Round (played in advance.): Mulligan beat Jenkins. The results of some games were" not handed in, probably owing to the interest taken in the game of Fraer v. Burton. Fraer is at present half a point ahead of Burton for first place, so Burton has to play for a win; a draw leaving him still half a point behind. Fraer opened with the "Collie System' 'of the Queen's Pawn Game, Burton replying with Capablanca's defence to this variation. At the adjournment both players were even in material, but- Fraer appeared to have a slight advantage in position. In the junior championship, W. Heley, by beating Dixon, is practically assured of winning as, so far, he has only lost half a point. Heley opened with "Bird's Opening" and nearly trapped Dixon into an early checkmate. Although Dixon did not fall into the trap, he later on lost both position and material, and was forced to resign. Two more old friends made an appearance during the evening, Mr. Simons, a local player, and Mr. Hubbard, an enthusiast from Tauranga. Draw For the Twelfth Round Seniors: Tibbitts v. Fraer, Watson v. Saxby, Clark v. Tattersall v. Edwards, Peterson v. Roland, Booth v. Kurney, Andrews v. Heywood. Burton and Jackson have byes. Juniors: Evans v. Blencowe (postponed); Rowley v. Bould, Dixon v. H. Heley, Shaw v. W. Heley, Musgrave y. Bailey, Lenihan v. Martin. Trophies for Championships It is very pleasing to note that the committee has arranged for two original trophies for the championships in the shape of two large rooks decorated with Maori carving. They are something unique in the chess world, and are most unitable for Rotorua. Of solid heart totara, stained a jet black and of imposing dimensions, they should be an inspiration to every member to strive to have his name on a little silver plate on one of them. They are to he competed for annually, the winner to hold one for a year. Loan o'f Books Mr. H. E. Clark, of Tokaanu, on hearing of the keenness of the local club, kindly sent, on loan, eight or nine finej books on chess. This spontaneous action on the part of Mr. Clark is surely an example to chess players in Rotorua who are diffident about joining. It is admitted that j times are hard, but the subscription ' works out at under 3d a week. and

nobody who cannot alford it is pressed for his subseription. The pleasure .the game gives, and a little civic pride in their town, should be sufficient to urge them to join and to make the club the best in the Dominion. Numbers count, and as regards finance, th'e "widow's mite" is all powerful. > Amendment to Ladder Rules The ladder rules have been amended give the win to the first player who wins one game, draws not to count. While this appears to he suitable while the championships are in progress, I think it is a retrograde step in the long run, as once the championships are finished, greater interest and more time will be taken in ladder games, and the match committee will then find that the old rule of "the best two out of three games, draws not to count" will be more conducive to a higher standard of play and keener eompetition. Another Famous Game The following game between Kieresitzky (White) and Anderssen (Black) is one of the most brilliant on record, and has been termed the "Immortal Game": 1P - K4, P - K4; 2P - KB4, P x P; 3B - B4, Q - R5 ch.; 4K - Bl, P - QKt4; 5B x KtP, Kt - KB3; 6Kt - KB3, Q - R3; 7P - Q3; Kt - R4; 8Kt - R4, Q - Kt4; 9Kt - B5, P - QB3; 10P - KKt4, Kt - B3; 11R - Ktl, P x B; 12P - KR4, Q -
