QUALIFYING PLAY

GOOD WEATHER CONDITIONS FAVOUR COMMENCEMENT 0 OF GAMES THIS MORNING 'S DRAW Under excellent overhead conditions the Rotorua Golf Club's open .aniateur tournament commenced this morning. Heavy rain i'or the past seven days had slowed down the fairways, and storm water — the result .of overnight rain — had accumulated in some of the bunkers. This led to serious trouhle for more than one contestant. An uhusually large number of visitors and supporters gathered to watch the morning play, this in spite of the chilly iphihition of a cold 7.30 a.m. start. As the day advanccd, the galieries increased and the colour scheme of golf raiment considerably brightened the links. It was noticeable that the men had at last found expression and flaming tangerines, brilliant blues, and fantastic greens and reds made up aJ veritable harlequin parade. The outstanding i'eature of the morning play was the round of H. B. Lusk (Auckland). His eard read Out— 4, 3, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4, 3—33. In— 5, 4, 4, 4, 3-, 3, 4, 4, 4—35. Total - G8 R. Rainger, another in the rank of the veterans, returned a gross 77, his home run being complered in even fours. Both the brothers Carr did good work. M. D. Carr taking 77, and S. E. Carr 74 for the journey. In the afternoon round, the weather steadily improved and bright sunshine took the place of the somewhat patchy overhead. The play on the aggregate was not good golf and few returned cards up to their handicap. THE CHAMPIONSHIP THE FIRST THIRTY-TWO H. B, Lusk, 60-79-145; M. D. Carr 73-79-152; T. Goudie 79-73-152; A. B.
