THE NATIONAL DOUBLES Chestnut Hili, August 28 In the National Doubles semi-finals Shields and Parker defeated Vines and Gledhill, 6 — 3, 6 — 4, 3 — 6, 3 — 6, , 6—2/ The game Lott and Stoeffen v. Quist and Turnbull reached 6 — 4, 1 — 2, and was then postponed. The latter match commenced under lowering skies. The Australians led 3-1, but their opponents drew level and then went ahead to 5 — 0. The Americans played brilliantly at the net and kept the Australians lobbing defensively on the back line. They were set point on Turnbull's service in the ninth, but the Australians rallied and took the game. They were within a point of breaking Stoeffen's service in. the tenth to even the score, but the Americans were not to be denied and won the game and set. After three games in the second set the light became so bad that it was decided to postpone. the match until . to-morrow. It had grown quite dark and rain seemed imminent.
