(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) Meibourne, August 28. The national golf championship and the womens' championship of Australia opened to-day on the Victoria Golf Links. . . Victoria defeated New South Wales fjy three matches to oiie; Tasmania defeated South Australia, five games to niJ and" Victoria defeated Tasmania four games to o'ne again becoming the champion state.. . Miss O'D'ette Lesebvre (N.S.W.) and Miss S.' Tolhurst opened the carniyal with one of the best matches ever seeii here. Miss Lesebvre went out' in 34, "being two up. Miss Tolhurst came home square iii fours, winning on the last green, and doing 18 h,oles in 73. . . In the handicap event, Miss B. Gaisford (New Zealand) clipped three strokes off the course fecord held Jby Mrs. Ivo Whitton, returning a gross 77 and finishiiig fifth. Mrs. E. Shaw (Eastefn) 71, handicap 14, won the eveht. Mrs. Dodgshun^ New Zeaiand was 30th and Mrs. j. William 87th. ■ The New Zealanders, who do not compete as a. teain fintil f1fiday, a.re e^perieiicing bad luck.
