CHARGES AGAINST ENGINEER DISMISSED BY COURT

Christchurch, Monday. Charges of the theft of property allegedly belonging to the Selwyn County Council, brought against Edward, formerly engineer-elerk to the council, were dismissed in the Magistrate's Cottrt to-day after the. evidence of three councillors had been heard. It was alleged that at the termination of his engagement,- in Apfil, 1933, Butfc took away gbods to the value of £55. The defence, in crossexamination of witnesses, led ^ evidence to show that Biitt had claimed the articles taken as his own property, that he had supplied the council with a list of the goods and had notified the chairman of his intention to take them. The Magistrate, Mr. E. D. Mosley, S.M., said that hd was far from satisfied that an^hing in the nature Of tlieft had been committed. He. dismissed the charges and ordered the goods to be returned to Buti.
