assailant committed to supreme court

Palmerston N., Saturday. The' hearing of.the charge against Lindsay Edist Edward Garner (21), panel-beater, of assault on Jqly 1 upon Christian Martin Sorepsen, storekeeper, with intent to rob, was concluded in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Detective J. G. Long, of Wellington said that Mrs Sorenson had picked accused out in an identification parado at Wellington. Accused, when questioned, denied committing the offence allege.d, but said he had read something about it. On the night of June 30 he was probably at a cabaret, he said. He had probably caught the last bus home for Johnsonville at 11.20 p.m. and remained at home for the rest of the night. In a signed statement, accused said he did not know where Himatangi was and did not know Mrs. Sorenson. Accused pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for trial.
