JUNIOR COMPETITION

MY IDEAL H-OLIDAY FIRST PRIZE AWARD. (Shamrock, 11, Ranolf St.) My choice of a holiday is the following. — Leave Rotorua hy the first train to Hamilton, then from th'ere go on to Palmerston North, on to Wellington, breaking my journey at each place and having one or two days to look j around. I would then go on to Lyttelton, on - to Christchurch, another break, then I on to Invercargill, passing through Ashburton, Timaru, Oamaru, then I Dunedin, where I should like to stay 1 two days at least. On the return trip, I would prefer to cross the Rimutaka Range through Masterton to Woodville, then Dannevirke, Waipawa and Hastings. I should like to stay here one day, as it was very much damaged by the earthquake on that account I would very much like to see what they have done "to repair the damage. I'm also anxious to see Napier, which' I am told is a pretty place, and when they have finished the repair work being done it will be better than ever. Next to Gisborne by motor, stop a day, then on to Opotiki. This trip, I believe, pasges through some beautiful scenery. Whakatane comes next, then on to Te Puke, and to Rotorua around the lake. I would then have learnt a good deal about the North and South Island, with some very pleasant things to remember. SECOND PRIZE AWARD. (Strong Oak, 10, Hinemoa St.) If I could go away for another holiday I would take my tent and camp by a stream so that 1 could fish or climb trees and look for birds' nests, and perhaps in the evening I would see all the rabbits at play and how I would wish that I was sixteen so as I could have just one shot out of a real gun. I am sure if I looked carefully in the caves I would find Maori axes and maybe a piece of greenstone. I love all the good things we have to eat — grilled fish, toast and coffee and dinners cooked in a camp oven, and we always take a big plum duff. I would love to ride a log down the rlver, perhaps fall off once or twice. When I am up those trees looking for birds' nests. I would love i to swing from one branch to another and if my trousers got torn Mums will not growl on a holiday. 1 am sure the days would be filled with adventures and at night I would sit for .a little while before the fire. I might roast one potato; they are so nice with butter and salt. THIRD PRIZE AWARD. (Blue Bird, 7, Union St.) For my holiday I would choose Christmas time, hecause then I would go to one of Auckland's beaches, whei'e I would be able to have sea bathing and build castles in the sand. I do enjoy going aeross to Devonport in the ferry boat. I think it would be great fun to visit the zoo I and have a ride on the elephant's I hack. One day I would spend at the Farmers' playing- with the bikes, and j having rides on the roundabout. Next i I would have a day going round the j' big shops to see Santa Claus, and tell | him what I would like him to put in my stocking. And then I would go home hoping Santa won't forget me. FOURTH PRIZE AWARD. (Frances Clay, 10, Meade St.) During my Christmias holidays I spent a very enjoyable fortnight at the Mount. In my first weelc I was very anxious to go fishing. Two days after I arrived there, I eollected my fishing line, some hooks and bait and set out with a ;girl friend. It was not a long walk to the small wharf from which we had decided to fish'. I returned home that afternoori with a solitary whitebait which I had found on the beach while walking home. The next day, with renewed hope and my fishing tackle, I set out once more. That day it was good spovt for me hecause I caught a small J Ch which a kind lady friend cooked for my breakfast. On my third day at the beach I was so sunhurned I could hardly move, hut I'm glad to say it didn/t last very long. * ' . " . ■ We spent mjany enjoyable times in the surf with our surf boards. Sometimes the breakers were so strong that they sent us sprawling beneath their foam. Once when I was ducked in this manner I recovered from my shock only to get another, for I f elt a" clawing at my f oot. Thinking it was a crab, I pulled it out hut found no mark. On turning round I discovered Rex standing at' my side. He had evidently wondered at my sudden disappearance, so came to find out. I,really think Rex enjoyed his fortnight as much as we did.
