"DISAPPOINTED"
LETTER RECEIVED RATEPAYERS ASSOCIATION AND COUNCIL'S "ABORTIVE" ECONOMY COMPLAINT TO BE ANSWERED When a letter was reeeived by the Rotorua Borough Council last evening from the Rotorua Ratepayers' Association expressing disappointment at "the abortive result of the council's attempt to effect eeonomies," Cr. •O. H. Coleman immediately rose and moved that the association be reminded that in addition to making up a sum of £1170 through the cancellation of the bath fees, the council had been able to reduce the general rate by 5 per cent, despite the fact that it had had to meet a small increase in the fire prevention rate and increase the grant to the advancement committee. He thought that taking these matters into consideration, the council had done very well and he thought that the association should be rerminded of the position.
Lr. J. Banks said that he was prepared to second the motion providing that it was also pointed out that the council had also been handicapped by an overdraft carried over from last year. The mayor: Do you want that included in the motion, Cr. Banks? Cr. Banks: Yes, I think so. If it had not been for that amount carried over we would not have had to make an exti^ grant to the Advancement Committee. The mayor: Do you think it advisable to mention that in view of the fact that that committee is the only one that overspent its estimates. Cr. L. J. Bayfeild: Oh, leave it out. Cr. Banks: Yes, you would want it left out. Cr. Bayfeild: What do you mean by that? Cr. Banks: Well, you fellows who overspent the money last year want it left out, but we who haven't overspent this year, want it left in. Cr. Bayfeild: I misunderstood you. [f that's what vou think about it,
; we won't go any further with it.
