THE BIRTH RATE
REACHES THE LOWEST LEVEL YET ON RECORD MARRIAGES INCREASE Wellington, Monday. Figures published in a report of vital statistics of the Dominion for 1932, which were compiled by the Census and Statistics Office, reveal that the birth-rate for the year reached the lowest level on record, with the figure of 16.09 per thousand of the mean population. Only 24,884 live births were registered during 1932, this figure representing a decrease in number as compared with 1931 of 1738, the largest drop ever recorded in New Zealand with the exception of the war years. The New Zealand birth-rate has shown an uninterrupted decline since 1920. The marriages registered in New Zealand in 1932 totalled .9896, an increase of 79 as compared with 1931. The marriage rate, 6.80 per thousand of mean population is slightly higher than the 1931 figure. The number of deaths registered was 11,683, .as against 1.12,047 in the previous year. The death rate is down to the lowest level on record. The rate of inf ant • mortality fell to 31.22 per thousand live births which is unprecedently low.
