BRITISH MINISTER EXPLAINS PROPOSED REDUCTIONS

London, August 20. Major W. T. Elliot, Minister of Agriculture, speaking at a f ete. at Howick, • said the Ministry's; statement recently issued, meant there there would be a reduction of imports of.upwards of 20,000 tons o,f frozen and chilled beef., compared with the last quarter of 1932. The virtual suspension of the release of New Zealand frozen beef meant a reduction approaching 8000 tons. A recent message stated the Ministry of Agriculture has issued a statement detailing the arrangements made to reduce meat imports for the remainder of the year. Chilled beef figures. will be reduced by 10 to 15 per cent. below the Ottawa quantities, and frozen beef 20 per cent. for the current quarter and 25 per cent next quarter. .New Zealand will send no frozen beef for .the last quarter of the year, and Australia will consign a reduced. quantity compared with 1932. It is believed that these arrangements will improve beef prices. There are also f air prospeets of improving the mutton and lamb prices owing .to the reduetions of Australian and New Zealand imports. •>- ■
