RELIEF PAY
OAMARU UNEMPLOYED ENTER STRONG PROTEST FURTHER CUTS EXPECTED Oamaru, Friday. A meeting of over 200 unemployed last night protested against the cuts in allocations. It was- reported that one hundrcd men had this week been reduced, and it is understood that a further 40 will be affected next week. At the same time last year the number on tbe register was considerably more, yet drastic cuts have. been made. It was resolved that a deputat'ion wait on the Mayoi*, Mr. F. Co'oney, and Mr. MacPherson, M.P., to move for a full allocation from the Unemployment Board for the district. Strong exception was taken to tbe attitude of the board relative to not forming a local Unemployment Committee in place of that recently dissolved. The question of married men being sent to the Waitaki hydro-electric works was also discussed, and it was resolved that the relief workers of North Otago strongly protest against being conscripted for hydro-electric works, and call upon the unemployed to refuse any call for work at tbe hydro-electric works under present conditions. The opinion was also expressed by the meeting that the No. lO^scheme should be abolished as the man who had tbe means was the only one who could benefit. As an indication of the benefic.al effect on the No. 10 scheme the local Oamaru Stone Company reports that the turnover for the year was 25 per cent. greater than during the previous t year.
