MR. J. A. LYONS RESENTS TONE OF BUSINESSMEN'S DELEGATION A SHARP REJOINDER

-By Telegrajjh — Copyright).

Sydney, August 12. A businessmen's deputation to Mr. Lyons, Federal Prime Minister, requested that the Government should immediately consider the withholding of further action on the tariff schedules, and substitute therefor a schedule in conformity with' the 1921-28 ditties, and consider further reducing these duties in accordance with the fall in salaries, rents, etC. Mr. Tout, chairman of the Transporters' Association submitted that a reduction in the artificial price levels maintained by the excessive tariff wall on essential commodities not subject to overseas competition could hring immediate relief. "We feel," he said, "that the reductions thus far introduced by your Government have not given effect to those clauses in the Ottawa- Agreernent which were framed for the purpose of assisting the British rnanufacturer." It was suggested that the Government might give its reply next week. Mr. Lyons. "Why not in 24 hours ?" Mr. Hawkes, chairnmn of the joint tariff revision committee, denied that any dictation was intended. Mr. Lyons: It is dictation, and we are not going to allow it. A policy approved hy the people, th'e policy on which the Government stands, is the only policy for which I stand. The Government refuses to take instructions from an outside organisation.
