Setfcle swept aloft in his balloon, Century of Progress, at 2.5 a.m. central standard tinxe on Saturday .for a scientific exploration of the strathosphere. . He expected to rise to .an altitude - of about 15 .miles to .study the little knoxyn cosmic rays. In five minutes the balloon had. risen. out of sight. Lieut.-Commander Settle- was confident of rising without interrup.ti.on through the up^per. .regions irx q motai ball seven feet in diameter CQHstructed of magnesium alloy sealed and tightly shut. A later message states that. Settle ' landed within ten minutes of the takeoff. Aftey attaining.1000 feet, he pulled the balloon vaive for a time to level pff but the valve .stxick and the ship began to drop. He dumped 55 bags of ballast each weighing 40 Ibs but thpy did not prpvent the descent. He was not injured.
