dunedin meeting protests against present policy BY HOUSING SCHEME

Dunedin, Wednesday. A meeting last night, addressed hy ReV. E. Cox, mayor, Mr. Jones, M.P., and others, unanimously passed a resolution prdtesting against the "Government's ill-advised policy of forcing married men into camps where the earnings are insufficierit to maintain a bare existence, and against the exiling of married men from their wives and families, believing that this policy endangers, the moral, mental and physical well-being of the rising generation." The meeting also endorsed the local housing scheme propounded by Mr. Cox, which he intends to submit to the Government and the City Council — namely, to build 300 houses at a cost of £900 each. The purchaser would insure himself for £700 and repay the loan by weekly instalments of 25s over 20 years. They could _reduce the loan for a house costing £450, paying 12s 6d weekly. It would mean the expenditure in wages of £90,000 and employ 600 men for a year on full-time. The work would create employment for 600 others in various activities. The speaker estimated that £175 would be required foi* furniture. This would mean the employment of another 150 men for a year. He estimated that 1500 men would bo restored to industry by the building of 30.0 houses. He proposed to ask the Unemployment Board to contribute £30,000 and the City Council £10,000. " "
