Defending the Ranfurly Shield for the- first time this season Canterbury had a runaway victory over Ashburton this iafternoon, w*inning hy 31 points against 7. Canterbury's line was not crossed, Ashburton's score coming from a penalty goal and a field goal. Ashburton kicked a field goal within six minutes of the start of the game and continued-to keep the score within reasonable limits until half-time but only hy keeping play as tight as possible. This kPpt the ball from the Canterbury's backs who! in the early part of the game showed marked superiority over Ashburton. At halftime tfie score was 18-7 in favour of Canterbury. In the second half Ashburton could not eontinue with their early policy while the Canterbury backs and forwards struck better form. The Ashburton deferice crumhled, enahling the Canterbury team to run up a big score. The home forwards played a very impressive game well up to the hest Ranfurly Shield standards. The backs were also good on attack and defence with one weakness: — passes were often slowly and uncertainly given, hy Stevens at the hase of the scrum. The Ashburton forwards played a steady, determined game but never looked like scoring. The backs showed some ahility on defence but never developed any attacking movement which was really dangerous.
