Trout Fry Liberation Liberation of trout fry in the Rotorua area will commence this week when 200,000 fry will be liberated in I Lake Rotorua. Liberations will also be carried out in Lake Taupo within the next few days. Both the Ngongotaha hatchery and the Tongariro hatehery are stocked to their fullest capacity at the present time and stripping operations in the Tongariro are proceeding rapidly and with excellent results. There are at present 2,250,000 ova in the Tongariro hatchery and 830,000 at Ngongotaha.
Opossum Trapplng Although prices for opossum skins this year are better than they have been for some time past, comparitively few trappers are operating in the wide area controlled by the Internal Affairs Department from Rotorua. It is reported, however, that those trappers who are operating, are securing good results while the standard of the skins is reported to be most satisfactory. This year, the trapping season extends over two months instead of the single month which was formerly permitted. The season will close at the end of the present month. Snow on Tauhara Tauhara Mojmtain outside Taupo had its first dusting of snow this winter on Tuesday night. The fall was light, but the indications are that further snow is pending. Rains have been particularly heavy in the Tokaanu area during the past few days and although the roads are in good order, there is considerable evidence of the effect of the heavy downpour. Borough Valuation A letter was received from the Valuer- General by tbe Rotorua Borough Council last night stating that, owing to pressure.of work, it would not be possible to undertake the revaluation of the borough this year. A Resignation The resignation of Cr. E. T. Johnson as a member of the band committee was accepted with regret by I the Borough Council last night. His j action was prompted by tbe refusal I of the council to reduce expenditure | upon the band. I | Canterbury Farmers' Position I Speaking at a meeting of the Roj torua sub-provincial executive, New I Zealand Farmers' Union yesterday, j Mr. W. H. Allen (Tirau), said that j following a visit made to the South j Island, Captain Rushworth, M.P., had ! stated that many Canterbury farmers i were in a far worse plight than those of tbe Auckland district. ^
Injured by Horse A youth, Henry Lynds, aged 17 years, was injured yesterday when a horse which he was riding in Sophia Street, slipped and rolled on him. He sustained a fractured right ankle and was admitted to King George V. Hospital. Butter Saies Competi'tion on the local butter market was discussed at the annual meeting of the Hinuera Dairy Co. The chairman (Mr. J. E. West) said: Some Waikato companies were sending butter to North Auckland and competing with companies there. An effort had been made to block this, but two companies had stood out and so had wreclpd the scheme. He thought everyone would agree that their butter was worth a premium on London prices for local saies of the Hinuera Co's. output 55 per cent was sold f.o.b., and 4'5 per cent. was exported on consignment. The f.o.b. saies had proved to he considerably better than export saies, but all returns had not yet come to hand Tourist Traffic In the eourse of a letter to the Rotorua Borough Council last night in supporting the granting of- sight- § seeing licenses to several applicants it was urged that a total of i20,000 visitors came to Rotorua each year.
