GIVES £1500 FOR ERECTION OF CHRISTCHURCH ORPHANAGE ALLOWS WORK TO PROCEED

— By Telegraph — Copyright).

Christchurch, Friday. A gift of £1500 by Mrs. Raymond C. Preston, of Auckland will make it possible to proceed with the immediate erection of a new Methodist orphanage in Christchurch. Recently the representatives of the Methodist Orphanage Board applied to the Minister of Employment (Hon. Adam Hamilton) asking that they be granted a building subsidy of 50 per cent, instead of 33 1-3 per cent, stating that if the larger subsidy were granted, the work could be put in hand at once. The Minister, however, refused to grant the request and it seemed probable that the work would be delayed. The position was explained to Mrs Preston who immediately made a gift of £1500, sufficient to make up the difference between the two subsidies.
