the week's games INTERESTING MATCHES IN THE WEDNESDAY COMPETITION CHAMPHONSHIP SERIES

(By

Last Saturday's games were postponed on account of the weather and the fixtures will remain the same for next Saturday. The Waratah v. Kowhai match should arouse keen interest as both teams are playing excellent basketball and are well in the rifnning foit clhampionship honours. The H.S.O.S. (B) team will meet their (A) team in the second round and can be expeeted to provide a close contest. On account of the uneven number of 1?e(a:ms ^entered for this competition, Huia has drawn a bye. Executive Meeting A meeting of the above was held last Monday evening Mrs. E. G. Guy presiding. Those present ineluded Mrs Managh, Mrs. I. Shearer, Mrs. W; H. Harwood, Misses I. Street, J. Greig, D. Kingon, F. Bates D. Emeny, I. Anderson, H. Eru, Y. Ford. It was resolved that all games for the remainder of the second round entered for the mid-week competition should be played at the Government Grounds. The selection of captain for the rep. team was left in the hands of the selectors. A discussion was held regarding billetting and entertaining the Auckland Training College team during its week-end visit to Rotorua. Final arrangements were postponed until next meeting. A letter inviting outside clubs to attend the basketball tournament held during the carnival week in August was read and approved. A member emphasised the difference in the standard of play between the senior and junior teams. As the season was so far advanced and such a small number of teams did not warrant two divisions, it was resolved to let the matter stand in abeyance. In the meantime the senior players were asked to take an interest in the junior teams in order to improve the junior standard. Wednesday Competition All games for the mid-week competition were played at Government Grounds and it was most satisfactory to note that all teams were ready to take the field punctually. H.S.O.S. v. Tui (B) Old Students played a good game and secured a comfortable win from their opponents. The Old Students' forwards worked well together and indulged in the short quick pass in preference to the long high pass which was so easily intercepted. Tui B are still replacing and adding new players to their team consequently they have not yet settled down to a reliable team combination. They hiave been promised the services of a coach so should acquire a closer knowledge of the game. T. Horton and C. Gunson goaled for Tui while F. Street proved a good defender. N. Devin, V. Robertson and L. Berghan were outstanding for Old Students. Mrs. E. Guy was the referee. Waratah v. H.S.O.S. (B) By defeating Old Studentg (B) on : Wednesday, Waratah gained a one j point lead in the mid-week competi- ! tion. Waratah s victory was .well deserved, their quick forceful passing giving Old Students few chances of intercepting. Their defence was strong and kept the Old Students forwards i well in cheek. The losers lacked dash • enough to stem the continuous attack, good passing rushes taking the ball from defence to the forward third where attack after attack failed due not only to Old Students defence, but to the decidedly weak play in the Old Students forward third. It was a pity that, in the most important of their games Old Students usually strong forward third should be off form. K. Constant and M. Ford played excellently for Waratah while M. Dowling was responsible for six of lO'ld Students' goals. The score w>as Waratah 16, H.S.O.S. (B) 7. Mrs. I. Shearer was the referee High School (A) v. Aotea High School at times found difficulty in breaking away from their opponents. Aotea alert and agile continually broke down smart passing movements and held their own in defence. The close score of High School 11, Aotea 10 gives an indication of the decided improvement of the Aotea team. Mrs. I. Shearer was in control of the game. High School (B) v. Tui (A) Playing with the handieap of one player short, Tui played a good game and was unfortunate in lo^ing by one goal. Play was very even throughout both sets of defenders working hard to prevent the forwards from scoring. The low score of 3-2 in favour of High School at half-time indieates that the trend of play was in the centre of the field. In the second half,. both teams were once again evenly matcbed and secured three goals each. The final score was High School (B) 7, Tui (A) 6. Miss I. Street refereed. To-morrow's Fixtures The draw for games to be played at Government Grounds at 2.30 p.m. to~ morrow is as follows: — No. 1 Court — Waratah v. Kowhai, Mrs. E. G. Guy. No. 2 Court — Old Students (B) v. O'ld Students (A), Mrs. I. Shearer.
